N° 114 pressed flowers hanten - umi blue
A padded Japanese hanten, embellished entirely by hand with my pressed flowers. I spent about 37 hours hand-stitching this one, and it’s the only one I’ll make, finished in my New York studio.
The hanten is made in collaboration with Kuwano Home. The cloth is crepe woven by KuwanoShinken, a third-generation weaver and maker from Kurume, Japan, from cotton threads dyed in Chikugo. It has a soft, fluffy touch and a subtle gloss that’s unusual in cotton, and the padding keeps it warm while staying light and breathable.
The pressed flowers are made from leftover cotton scraps from the hanten cloth itself, so they're cut from the same crepe as the coat. Each one is handmade and sewn on one at a time. This is the umi blue hanten, with pressed flowers. I’ll only make this design once, so this piece is one of a kind.
Features two front patch pockets and a center fabric tie closure.
